Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male larynx sits superior to the cervical trachea, with the thyroid cartilage forming the anterior laryngeal wall and the cricoid cartilage creating a complete ring immediately inferior to it. C-shaped tracheal cartilages continue caudally, their anterior convexity prominent, while the posterior tracheal wall remains membranous and lies adjacent to the esophagus. Intrinsic laryngeal muscles overlay the cartilaginous framework, and the subglottic airway narrows as it passes from the cricoid into the tracheal lumen. Orientation is clean and instructive. A lateral view matters because it clarifies the step-down from the rigid cricoid ring into the semi-rigid tracheal rings, which is where post-intubation injury and subglottic stenosis often declare themselves clinically. It also helps when teaching why the cricoid, not the thyroid cartilage, is the key circumferential support of the upper airway, and why cricoid pressure (Sellick maneuver) targets the cricoid to occlude the esophagus against the cervical vertebrae.
