Description
Rendered as a transparent male mandible in lateral perspective, the body and ramus of the lower jaw remain visible while the mandibular canal is emphasized by the highlighted inferior alveolar nerve. Posteriorly, the nerve enters the mandibular foramen on the medial aspect of the ramus and then courses anteriorly and slightly inferiorly within the canal, running deep to the apices of the molars and premolars. Near the premolar region it continues toward the mental foramen, where the mental nerve exits to supply the skin of the chin and lower lip, while the incisive branch carries forward within bone toward the anterior teeth. Teeth are shown in situ, giving a clear sense of the nerve’s proximity to individual roots. Dental anesthesia and mandibular surgery hinge on this relationship. A mandibular (inferior alveolar) nerve block targets the nerve near the mandibular foramen, and this view helps explain why needle placement too posterior risks parotid capsule penetration and transient facial nerve palsy. Root apices in the posterior mandible often lie close to the canal, so extractions, endodontic over-instrumentation, and implant osteotomies can produce inferior alveolar nerve neuropraxia, dysesthesia, or persistent numbness in the mental distribution.
