Description
Seen in lateral profile of the male neck, the transversus colli nerve (transverse cervical nerve, C2 to C3) emerges from the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid at the nerve point of the neck (Erb point) and courses anteriorly across the muscle toward the anterior cervical region. Superficial branches fan out in the subcutaneous tissue inferior to the angle of the mandible and superior to the clavicle, distributing toward the skin over the anterior triangle. Posteriorly, the trapezius and posterior cervical musculature form the muscular backdrop while the thyroid gland lies anteroinferiorly in the visceral compartment. Clean topography. Clinically, this course matters because the transverse cervical nerve is routinely encountered during cervical lymph node biopsy and open approaches along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid, where superficial sensory branches can be stretched or transected. Injury typically produces a well-demarcated patch of numbness or dysesthesia over the anterolateral neck, and the nerve can be targeted for a superficial cervical plexus block performed at the midpoint of the sternocleidomastoid. Its relationship to the external jugular vein and the investing fascia also helps explain why small incisions or retraction in this region can cause disproportionate sensory symptoms even when deeper motor pathways remain intact. Use this lateral head and neck plate for teaching cervical plexus cutaneous branches in gross anatomy and regional anesthesia modules, and for illustrating operative risk zones in ENT, endocrine, and head and neck surgery texts. It also works well in patient-facing materials explaining postoperative anterior neck paresthesia after biopsy or thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
