Description
Running anterior to the auricle and emerging from the parotid gland, the zygomatic branch of the facial nerve (CN VII) courses superiorly across the masseter toward the zygomatic arch, then fans into fine rami over the lateral orbital margin. Superficial to the zygomatic bone and deep to the subcutaneous tissues, its fibers track toward orbicularis oculi and adjacent mimetic muscles, with the parotid duct and facial vessels lying in close regional proximity. The lateral head and neck context also places the nerve against the backdrop of the temporalis region superiorly and the mandibular ramus inferiorly. Clear surface anatomy. Damage to the zygomatic branch produces a recognizable pattern: impaired eyelid closure and reduced blink, with exposure keratopathy risk when orbicularis oculi paresis prevents complete corneal protection. Surgeons watch this branch during parotidectomy, facelift (rhytidectomy) flap elevation, and repair of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, where traction or transection can occur as the nerve crosses the midface. This view also helps distinguish facial nerve motor branches from nearby sensory pathways such as the zygomatic nerve (V2) supplying the malar skin.
