Description
Presented in lateral profile, the male skull and upper cervical spine are rendered with the facial nerve (CN VII) highlighted as it exits the stylomastoid foramen posterior to the external acoustic meatus and courses within the parotid region. From that trunk, the occipital branch is traced sweeping posteriorly and superiorly toward the occipital scalp, running superficial to the mastoid process and along the posterior auricular region. The external ear, mandible, maxilla, and calvarial sutures provide bony landmarks for orientation. Cervical spinal nerves are also suggested inferiorly for context. Tracing this small posterior sweep matters because it sits in the surgical and anesthetic corridor behind the auricle, where incisions for mastoidectomy, parotidectomy extension, or facelift approaches can threaten posterior auricular and occipital motor and sensory-adjacent fibers. Injury to the facial nerve proximal to branching, or traction in the parotid tail, changes the pattern of postoperative facial weakness, and this lateral perspective clarifies the relationship between CN VII, the stylomastoid foramen, and the mastoid tip.
