Description
Viewed laterally, the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3) is traced from the region of the trigeminal (semilunar) ganglion toward the infratemporal fossa, with the meningeal branch (nervus spinosus) shown looping posteriorly and then reentering the cranial cavity via the foramen spinosum. Its course hugs the skull base, running superior to the mandibular ramus and posterolateral to the foramen ovale, a useful spatial cue when teaching the relationship between V3 and the middle cranial fossa. Adjacent brain surface anatomy is rendered with recognizable gyri and sulci, and the spinal cord continues inferiorly to anchor the craniospinal axis. Clean, readable pathways. That backward turn into the cranium matters because the meningeal branch carries sensory fibers to the dura mater of the middle cranial fossa and also conveys sympathetic vasomotor fibers to the middle meningeal artery. Clinically, the proximity of the nerve to the foramen spinosum and the middle meningeal artery makes it relevant in epidural hematoma patterns after temporal bone trauma, and it is a named landmark in skull base surgery and endovascular procedures targeting the middle meningeal artery. This lateral perspective also clarifies why V3-related pain syndromes can present with dural referral, even when the primary complaint seems extracranial.
