Description
Arising from the parotid plexus after the facial nerve (CN VII) exits the stylomastoid foramen, the temporal branch courses superiorly and anteriorly toward the temple, fanning across the zygomatic arch into the temporal region. An anterior skull view typically places the nerve superficial to the temporalis fascia as it approaches the lateral forehead, where it supplies the frontalis, orbicularis oculi (superior part), and corrugator supercilii. Blue venous channels run in parallel, consistent with the superficial temporal vein territory and related superficial facial venous pathways near the lateral orbit. Fine branching dominates. For facial surgeons and injectors, this anterior perspective clarifies why the temporal branch is vulnerable where it crosses the zygomatic arch, a common danger zone in rhytidectomy, temporal lifts, and endoscopic brow procedures.
