Description
Posterior skin transparency reveals the triceps brachii occupying the dorsal compartment of the upper arm, with a long head arising medially from the infraglenoid tubercle and a lateral head forming the superolateral contour over the posterior humerus. Inferiorly, the medial head becomes more apparent deep to the superficial bellies as they converge into a common triceps tendon inserting on the olecranon of the ulna. Lateral to the triceps mass, the brachioradialis and the extensor carpi radialis longus begin to define the proximal forearm, while the biceps brachii remains visible anteriorly through the semi-transparent integument as a positional reference across the humerus. Clear landmarks. Posterior arm views matter because they map extensor anatomy to palpable and procedural landmarks at the elbow, where the triceps tendon, olecranon, and posterior fat pad relate to bursitis, distal triceps tendinopathy, and traumatic rupture. This perspective also supports teaching the interval of the spiral (radial) groove, where the radial nerve and profunda brachii artery run deep to the lateral head and can be injured in midshaft humeral fractures, producing wrist drop and sensory loss over the dorsum of the hand. Seeing the muscle bellies under skin helps correlate surface contour with deeper compartments.
