Description
Posterior surface anatomy of an adult female is rendered with the superficial and selected deeper voluntary musculature exposed from the occiput to the calcaneus. Superiorly, the trapezius spans from the midline nuchal region and thoracic spinous processes to the lateral clavicle and acromion, sitting superficial to the levator scapulae and rhomboid major as it frames the medial borders of the scapulae. Laterally, the posterior deltoid caps the shoulder while the triceps brachii forms the bulk of the posterior arm, and inferiorly the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally toward the humerus over the thoracolumbar fascia. Along the vertebral column, the erector spinae mass runs longitudinally, transitioning caudally to the gluteus maximus over the posterior pelvis, then to the hamstrings on the posterior thigh and the gastrocnemius and soleus forming the calf. Topographic relationships in this view matter in day-to-day clinical work: the thoracolumbar fascia and erector spinae are frequent pain generators in mechanical low back strain, and the inferior border of latissimus dorsi is a common landmark in posterolateral thoracic and flank approaches. Clear delineation of the gluteal region supports safe intramuscular injection planning in the superolateral quadrant, reducing risk to the sciatic nerve as it courses deep to gluteus maximus toward the posterior thigh. Hamstring muscle bellies and their proximal tendons also anchor the discussion of acute sprinting injuries and proximal avulsions at the ischial tuberosity. A practical map. Use it for posterior trunk and lower limb teaching in gross anatomy, kinesiology, and sports medicine modules, or as a figure for textbooks discussing myofascial planes, posterior chain mechanics, and regional anesthesia surface landmarks. It also fits patient-facing educational materials on hamstring strain rehab and low back muscle overuse. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
