Description
Zygomatic bone anatomy is centered here on the processus frontalis ossis zygomatici, the stout superior projection that rises from the body of the zygoma to meet the frontal bone at the sutura frontozygomatica. From an anterior perspective, the frontal process forms the superolateral margin of the orbital aperture, with its orbital surface facing medially toward the eye socket while the facial surface faces anteriorly on the cheek. Superiorly it approaches the os frontale, and inferiorly it blends into the zygomatic body that continues toward the zygomaticomaxillary region. This is the lateral orbital rim. Clinically, the frontozygomatic suture is a primary landmark in zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures, where displacement can widen the lateral orbital aperture and alter malar projection, producing enophthalmos or diplopia when orbital volume changes. Fixation frequently targets the frontozygomatic buttress through a lateral brow or upper eyelid approach, so an anterior view that isolates the vertical buttress helps you teach where plates and screws sit relative to the orbital rim and adjacent facial skeleton. Bony thickness and contour matter here, and the crisp separation between orbital and facial surfaces supports preoperative planning discussions and CT correlation.
