Description
Sectional anatomy of the male kidney is rendered in an anterior-oriented cross-section, with the renal cortex forming the outer rim and the renal medulla arranged as pyramids tapering toward the renal papillae and renal pelvis. A bulky, irregular renal neoplasm occupies a substantial portion of the parenchyma, distorting the normal corticomedullary junction and compressing adjacent pyramids. Medially, the renal hilum is opened to show the renal artery and renal vein entering and leaving the kidney, and the renal pelvis continuing inferiorly as the ureter. Nephron-bearing cortex and collecting system landmarks remain visible at the periphery where architecture is less effaced. Stage III renal tumors matter because local extension, rather than distant spread, drives operative planning and prognosis in many renal cell carcinomas. With tumors of this extent, surgeons and radiologists look closely for invasion into the renal vein or segmental venous branches, involvement of the renal sinus fat, and proximity to the collecting system and hilum, since these features influence the choice between partial nephrectomy and radical nephrectomy and anticipate complications such as hematuria, urinary obstruction, or venous tumor thrombus. Staging is anatomy-dependent. This cut plane makes that point quickly. Use this illustration in urology and oncology teaching when introducing TNM staging of kidney cancer, or in pathology and anatomy courses to contrast normal corticomedullary organization with mass effect on the renal pelvis and ureter. It also fits patient education handouts and surgical consent materials discussing nephrectomy, hilar control, and why cross-sectional imaging correlates with gross sectional pathology.
