Description
Seen in an anterior longitudinal section of a male kidney, the renal capsule outlines the organ while the renal cortex forms the peripheral rim and the medulla lies deeper as striated renal pyramids converging toward the papillae. Inferomedially, an irregular malignant mass expands within the parenchyma and compresses adjacent nephrons, narrowing the corticomedullary tissue planes. Medial to the tumor, the minor and major calyces funnel into the renal pelvis, which continues inferiorly as the proximal ureter at the hilum. Spatial distortion is obvious. Stage 2 renal carcinoma (typified clinically by a T2 lesion, more than 7 cm but confined to the kidney) is often large enough to deform the collecting system without yet extending into the renal vein, perinephric fat, or Gerota fascia, and that distinction drives staging and operative planning. By illustrating parenchymal compression rather than extrarenal spread, this sectional perspective aligns well with how the disease is evaluated on contrast-enhanced CT or MRI when assessing tumor location relative to calyces, pelvis, and anticipated resection margins. Expect the teaching conversation to include hematuria, flank pain, and incidental detection on imaging.
