Angular Vein in the Body

Description

Running from the medial canthus toward the root of the nose, the angular vein is traced superficially as it forms from the convergence of the supratrochlear and supraorbital veins, then continues inferiorly along the lateral aspect of the nasal bridge onto the anterior cheek. Lateral to its course lie the zygomaticus major and minor over the zygomatic bone, while inferiorly the vessel aligns toward the facial vein as it passes near the anterior margin of the masseter. Orbicularis oculi frames the orbit, with levator labii superioris and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi positioned just lateral and inferior to the nasal sidewall. Skin is removed to emphasize muscular planes. Bilateral auricles and the sternocleidomastoid define the lateral boundary of the head and neck field. Clinical interest in the angular vein comes from its valveless communications with the superior ophthalmic vein and cavernous sinus via the orbital venous plexus, the anatomic basis for intracranial spread of infection from the perinasal region. This anterior view also supports teaching of facial filler complication pathways, where inadvertent intravascular injection near the nasojugal fold or lateral nasal sidewall can track retrograde into the ophthalmic circulation, risking vision loss. The relationship of the vessel to the medial canthal tendon and adjacent mimetic muscles provides clear surface landmarks for procedural planning.
