Description
Arising from the left ventricle, the ascending aorta is shown immediately superior to the aortic valve, with the aortic root expanding into the right and left aortic sinuses before curving posteriorly and to the left as the aortic arch. Near the base, the right coronary artery originates from the right aortic sinus and courses in the right atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus, while the left coronary artery arises from the left aortic sinus and passes between the pulmonary trunk and left auricle before dividing into its major branches. Semi-transparent rendering of the heart keeps the left ventricular outflow tract, aortic root, and proximal great vessels readable without obscuring the highlighted arch. Orientation is anterior oblique. Clear landmarks. Emphasis on the coronary ostia and proximal ascending aorta makes this view directly relevant to aortic root pathology and coronary perfusion, where millimeters matter. Aortic root dilation, bicuspid aortic valve–associated aortopathy, and acute type A aortic dissection often involve the sinotubular junction and can compromise coronary flow by extending into the sinuses or coronary ostia. For procedural planning, this is the segment interrogated on ECG-gated CT angiography and transesophageal echocardiography, and it is the operative field for Bentall procedures, valve-sparing root replacement, and proximal anastomoses during open repair. Cardiology and cardiovascular surgery faculty can drop this into lectures on the aortic root and coronary circulation, and anatomy instructors will find it fits well into thorax blocks when teaching the relationship of the aorta, pulmonary trunk, and left atrium.
