Description
Shown in lateral profile from proximal thigh to the plantar foot, the arterial tree descends as the femoral artery along the anteromedial thigh before continuing as the popliteal artery posterior to the knee joint. Distal to the popliteal fossa, branches consistent with the anterior tibial artery course anterolaterally toward the dorsum of the foot, while the posterior tibial artery tracks inferiorly in the deep posterior compartment toward the medial malleolus, giving a lateral trajectory to the fibular (peroneal) artery. Accompanying deep veins run in close apposition as venae comitantes, and a superficial channel consistent with the great saphenous vein ascends on the medial leg to drain proximally. A lateral leg view clarifies where vessels pass from one compartment to another and which bony landmarks guide access, from the adductor hiatus into the popliteal fossa, then around the tibia and fibula toward the ankle. That matters in peripheral arterial disease, where stenosis at the femoropopliteal segment or tibial runoff vessels changes pulses and perfusion distally, and in acute compartment syndrome when swelling threatens the anterior tibial artery and deep peroneal nerve along the interosseous membrane. It also maps common surgical corridors for popliteal exposure and tibial bypass targets near the medial malleolus.
