Description
Running along the medial thigh, the femoral artery continues as the popliteal artery posterior to the knee before dividing into the anterior tibial and posterior tibial arteries for the leg and foot. Distally, the anterior tibial artery passes through the interosseous membrane to the anterior compartment, then becomes the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsum of the foot, while the posterior tibial artery courses inferiorly and medially, giving rise to the fibular (peroneal) artery laterally and terminating as the medial and lateral plantar arteries. Superficial veins, including the great saphenous vein on the medial side and the small saphenous vein posteriorly, overlay the deep venous comitantes that accompany the tibial arteries. Clear color coding separates arterial inflow from venous return. For teaching lower limb circulation, this combined arterial and venous overlay is the workhorse view because it ties named vessels to surface pathways and common access points.
