Description
Shown in an x-ray style lateral view of the right lower leg and foot, the tibia and fibula appear semi-transparent with the distal arterial tree highlighted in red as it courses from the anterior compartment toward the dorsum and lateral aspect of the foot. The anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery across the talus and navicular region, giving tarsal branches and then arcuate and dorsal metatarsal arteries that run distally toward the digits. Along the lateral border, calcaneal and lateral tarsal branches trace the contour of the hindfoot and midfoot, with small arterioles fanning across the metatarsals and phalanges. Clear spacing between bones and vessels makes the pedal distribution easy to track. Pedal arterial anatomy matters because distal perfusion fails early and often in peripheral arterial disease, and the dorsalis pedis pulse is a routine bedside landmark that becomes unreliable with variant branching or a diminutive dorsalis pedis.
