Description

Plantar anatomy of the male foot is presented with the tarsus, metatarsals, and phalanges rendered in situ, while the principal pedal vessels course across the sole. The posterior tibial artery enters distal to the medial malleolus and divides into the medial and lateral plantar arteries, which sweep anteriorly deep to the plantar aponeurosis and intrinsic musculature, then curve laterally and proximally to form the plantar arterial arch. From this arch, plantar metatarsal arteries run distally in the intermetatarsal spaces and give rise to proper plantar digital arteries along the medial and lateral margins of the toes. Veins accompany the arterial tree in parallel. Because the view is plantar, it clarifies relationships that are easy to miss on a dorsal depiction, especially the deep plantar arch and its continuity with the dorsalis pedis artery via the deep plantar branch through the first intermetatarsal space. A key landmark. This layout matters in peripheral arterial disease and diabetic foot care, where reduced flow in the posterior tibial and plantar arteries can predict plantar ulcer risk and delayed wound healing, and it also maps the vascular structures that must be protected during plantar fasciotomy, tarsal tunnel release, and forefoot incisions near the metatarsal heads. Podiatry and orthopedic teaching sessions use this plate to correlate pedal pulses and angiosomes with incision planning, flap design, and revascularization targets in limb salvage. Medical publishers can pair it with chapters on the tarsus and podalic vascular anatomy, or with clinical notes on dorsalis pedis versus posterior tibial patency.
