Description
Seen from a lateral aspect, the illustration traces the arterial supply of the male foot against the tarsus, metatarsals, and phalanges. Proximally at the ankle, the distal tibia and fibula frame the talus, while the anterior tibial artery continues onto the dorsum as the dorsalis pedis artery, giving tarsal and metatarsal branches that course distally toward the toes. Inferiorly, plantar vessels are suggested as they curve toward the sole to contribute to the deep plantar (pedal) arch, positioned deep to the metatarsal bases and spanning from lateral to medial with plantar metatarsal arteries running forward into the digital branches. That lateral oblique perspective is a workhorse for teaching the relationship between dorsalis pedis and the plantar circulation, and it mirrors the landmarks clinicians use at the bedside. Palpation of the dorsalis pedis pulse just lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon and assessment of pedal arch integrity matter in peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot ischemia, and preoperative planning for distal bypass or endovascular revascularization. Collateral patterns around the tarsus also explain why proximal stenoses can present with forefoot claudication or toe gangrene despite partial reconstitution of flow. Use this plate in gross anatomy and podiatric anatomy courses to anchor vessel-to-bone relationships, or in surgical and wound-care publications discussing angiosomes of the foot, flap planning, and arterial access for pedal loop interventions.
