Description
Posterior integument is rendered semi-translucent to reveal the superficial back musculature of an adult male, with the trapezius spanning from the superior nuchal region and midline thoracic spinous processes to the scapular spine and acromion. Inferior and lateral to it, the latissimus dorsi fans superolaterally from the thoracolumbar fascia toward the proximal humerus, framing the posterior axillary fold. Medial to the scapulae, the rhomboid major and minor bridge the thoracic spinous processes to the medial borders of the scapulae, while the epaxial erector spinae columns run longitudinally on either side of the vertebral midline. Spinous processes remain readable as skeletal landmarks beneath the muscle planes. This rear view is the workhorse orientation for teaching scapulothoracic mechanics and the layered anatomy encountered during posterior approaches to the thoracic and lumbar spine. Surface projections of the trapezius, rhomboids, and erector spinae help explain why accessory nerve dysfunction produces scapular droop and lateral winging, and why strain patterns often localize along the thoracolumbar fascia and paraspinal gutters. Clear midline and paraspinal references also support safe planning for procedures such as lumbar puncture, where the needle path stays in the interspinous midline while avoiding deeper paraspinal musculature. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and kinesiology courses to orient students to superficial back muscle borders and their relationship to the spine and scapula, or in orthopaedics, sports medicine, and physical therapy materials discussing posture, shoulder girdle dysfunction, and low back pain patterns.
