Description
Beneath the nasal skin, the depressor septi nasi is shown as a paired slip arising from the incisive fossa of the anterior maxilla and ascending superiorly to blend with the mobile nasal septum and the posterior aspect of the alar part of nasalis at the columellar base. Medial to the nasolabial fold it lies deep to orbicularis oris, while laterally it relates to the upper lip elevators and the fibers of nasalis that contour the nostril margin. Around it, the illustration logically includes the orbicularis oculi encircling the palpebral fissure, zygomaticus major running inferomedially toward the modiolus, and the masticatory muscles, temporalis in the temporal fossa and masseter spanning from zygomatic arch to mandibular ramus. Functionally, depressor septi nasi couples upper lip depression to nasal tip motion, so its contraction can pull the nasal tip inferiorly and narrow the external nasal valve during animation.
