Description

Medially, the muscle fibers approach the anterior nasal spine and septal cartilage; laterally, they blend with the orbicularis oris and the nasalis around the nasal base and ala. Under a semi-transparent skin layer, the frontal bone, orbits, nasal bones, maxilla, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae provide fixed bony reference points for the soft tissue attachments. The relationship is straightforward. Functionally, depressor septi nasi pulls the nasal tip and columella inferiorly during upper lip animation, so hypertrophy or strong coupling to orbicularis oris can create a tip droop and dynamic alar widening when smiling.
