Rendered as a transparent male trunk with emphasis on the lumbar spine, the external vertebral venous plexus tracks longitudinally along the posterior elements of the vertebral column, forming paired, interconnected venous channels that parallel the spinous and transverse processes. Segmental communications are suggested at each level where the veins course adjacent to the intervertebral foramina, in close proximity to the exiting lumbar spinal nerves (blue) and the margins of the intervertebral discs. Superiorly and inferiorly, the plexiform pattern implies continuity with cervical and sacral segments, matching the full-length paravertebral drainage pathway. Valveless anatomy is the point. The external vertebral venous plexus communicates freely with the internal vertebral (epidural) venous plexus through intervertebral veins, so rises in intra-abdominal pressure can reverse flow and transmit infection or tumor cells along the vertebral canal and into the epidural space.
