Description
Centered in the cranial cavity, the falx cerebri rises as a sickle-shaped dural fold in the longitudinal fissure, separating the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Anteriorly it narrows to its attachment at the crista galli of the ethmoid bone, then extends posteriorly toward the internal occipital region, where it approaches the tentorium cerebelli. Blue dura mater lines the inner table of the calvaria, while the cerebral convexities sit inferior to the removed skull cap and medial to the exposed frontal bone and orbital roofs. Midline anatomy, made obvious. Clinically, this cut section clarifies why falcine landmarks matter on CT and MRI when you are assessing midline shift after traumatic brain injury or intracranial hemorrhage; the falx provides a fixed reference against which subfalcine herniation and displacement of the cingulate gyrus are judged. It also frames the corridor for interhemispheric approaches used to access anterior cerebral artery (ACA) aneurysms and pericallosal lesions, where bridging veins to the superior sagittal sinus and the proximity of the sinus itself constrain retraction and dictate the safe operative window.
