Description
Arcing vertically in the midline, the falx cerebri appears as a sickle-shaped dural reflection interposed between the right and left cerebral hemispheres, extending inferiorly toward the corpus callosum while remaining separated from it by the callosal sulcus and cingulate gyrus. Superiorly it attaches to the inner table of the calvaria along the sagittal suture region, where its convex border blends with dura mater and relates to the superior sagittal sinus. Posteriorly the falx meets the tentorium cerebelli near the internal occipital protuberance region, while the cerebellum and brainstem sit posteroinferior to the cerebrum in the same lateral (sagittal) section. Clear midline anatomy. This lateral perspective matters because it places the falx in the exact plane used to teach and plan midline approaches and to interpret sagittal CT and MRI, where a normal falx can calcify with age and becomes a dense linear landmark. Its venous relationships are the clinical payoff: tearing of bridging veins into the superior sagittal sinus region produces subdural hematoma that tracks along the falx, and parasagittal meningiomas commonly arise from falcine dura and may invade or compress the superior sagittal sinus. Surgeons and interventionalists also use the falx as a depth and laterality reference when navigating interhemispheric fissure corridors and when assessing midline shift from mass effect.
