Description
Presented as a standing adult Black woman with a partially transparent left torso, the illustration traces the alimentary tract from the cervical esophagus descending through the thorax to the stomach in the left upper quadrant, just inferior to the diaphragm. Superior and to the right, the liver occupies the right hypochondrium and epigastrium, draping anterolaterally over the proximal stomach. Coils of small intestine fill the central and inferior abdomen, while the large intestine frames them peripherally as the ascending colon on the right, transverse colon crossing superiorly, descending colon on the left, and sigmoid colon curving inferomedially into the rectum. Spatial orientation matters here. Seeing the stomach tucked under the left costal margin and the liver’s broad anterior surface clarifies why epigastric and right upper quadrant symptoms can overlap, and why hepatomegaly or gastric distension can shift palpable landmarks on physical exam. The continuous, lumen-based pathway from esophagus to rectum also supports teaching of transit-related pathology such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, small bowel obstruction with proximal dilation, and large bowel obstruction patterns along the colon and sigmoid. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and physiology lectures on digestion, nutrition, and abdominal surface anatomy, or for patient-facing education in gastroenterology clinics explaining where dyspepsia, constipation, or colitis occurs along the tract. It also suits medical publishing layouts that need an integrated view of stomach, intestines, and colon in correct topography within the female torso. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
