Description
Arising from the left pulmonary artery, the inferior lingular artery courses anteroinferiorly into the lingula of the left upper lobe, running with its segmental bronchus and adjacent pulmonary veins. From an anterior perspective, its caliber change from segmental branch to smaller arterioles is apparent as it radiates toward the anterolateral lung parenchyma. Nearby, you would expect the superior and inferior pulmonary veins to converge medially toward the left atrium, while the aortic arch and main pulmonary trunk sit superior to the hilum. Relationships stay clear in this projection. The lingular branches matter because they define vascular territories during left upper lobe surgery, where lingula preservation versus lingular resection hinges on accurate identification of segmental arteries. Mistaking a lingular artery for an upper-division branch can lead to ischemia of the retained segment or problematic bleeding during fissure work, a known challenge in minimally invasive lobectomy and segmentectomy.
