Description
Running longitudinally along the posterior thoracic wall, the longissimus thoracis is presented beneath the reflected skin of a male back as the lateral column of the erector spinae complex. Its muscle belly sits lateral to the spinous processes and medial to the rib angles, with segmental tendinous slips reaching laterally to the ribs and medially toward the thoracic transverse processes. Superior fibers approach the upper thoracic levels, while inferior fibers track toward the thoracolumbar junction where the erector spinae mass thickens. Deep layering is implied by the dissection window, separating this column from more superficial back musculature. Understanding the longissimus thoracis matters when you need to teach or plan around posterior spinal exposure and paraspinal muscle-splitting intervals.
