Description
Centered within the right atrioventricular orifice, the open tricuspid valve is seen from the right atrial cavity with its three leaflets separated, the anterior leaflet positioned anteroinferiorly, the septal leaflet along the medial (septal) margin, and the posterior leaflet posteroinferiorly. Chordae tendineae arise from the free edges and ventricular surfaces of the leaflets and course inferiorly into the right ventricle to insert on papillary muscles of the right ventricular wall. Surrounding atrial endocardium frames the annulus, while the ventricular inflow tract lies inferior and slightly anterior to the valve plane. Atrial-side visualization is the cleanest way to teach leaflet identification and commissural relationships, which matters when you are correlating echocardiography with surgical anatomy. In functional tricuspid regurgitation, annular dilatation and right ventricular remodeling tether the leaflets so coaptation fails, and appreciating where the septal leaflet sits against the interventricular septum helps explain why device leads and endocarditis frequently involve this region. It is a practical view for understanding right-sided flow dynamics. Short and direct.
