Seen from the right atrioventricular orifice, the closed tricuspid valve forms a three-cusp seal between the right atrium (superior and posterior) and right ventricle (inferior and anterior). The anterior, posterior, and septal leaflets coapt along their free margins, with chordae tendineae extending distally to the anterior, posterior, and septal papillary muscles of the right ventricle. Medially, the septal leaflet lies adjacent to the interventricular septum, while laterally the anterior leaflet approaches the right ventricular free wall; the annulus defines the fibrous rim of the valve plane. Leaflet apposition is the point. A closed-valve rendering matters because it teaches what “competence” looks like in systole, when right ventricular pressure should drive tight coaptation and prevent tricuspid regurgitation into the right atrium.
