Description
Posterior trunk anatomy is presented with an overlaid rendering of the paired kidneys (renes) highlighted bilaterally in the upper lumbar region, their hila oriented anteromedially while the convex lateral borders face toward the flanks. Each ureter descends inferiorly from the renal pelvis, coursing caudally toward the pelvis in a path that parallels the psoas major (not shown) before approaching the urinary bladder. Relative to the vertebral column, the organs sit lateral to the spinous processes and deep to the posterior abdominal wall musculature. Orientation is clear. Clinically, a back view like this is the one you want when teaching referred pain patterns and procedural access to the urinary tract: renal colic from a ureteric calculus typically radiates from the costovertebral angle toward the groin as the stone tracks distally. It also supports safe planning for percutaneous nephrostomy and posterior approaches to the kidney, where the relationship of the upper pole to the 12th rib and pleura (and the lower pole to the iliac crest) drives needle trajectory and respiratory timing. The ureter’s long vertical course helps explain why obstruction can present at predictable narrowing points even when the kidney itself appears structurally intact.
