Description
Arising as a longitudinal channel along the posterior aspect of the spinal cord, the posterior spinal vein is presented as a translucent vessel with fine venular tributaries converging toward it. From an inferior viewpoint, the vessel’s course reads cranial, with small, obliquely oriented venules joining from lateral positions before the main channel continues superiorly. Intersecting lines suggest a plexiform arrangement consistent with posterior spinal venous drainage that communicates segmentally with radicular veins and the internal vertebral venous plexus. Flow is implied rather than labeled. Posterior spinal venous pathways matter because they participate in valveless, bidirectional venous networks that connect the spinal canal to the vertebral venous plexuses, a common route discussed in the spread of infection or metastatic disease and in the hemodynamics of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula. An inferior-to-superior orientation also supports teaching the cranial direction of venous return and the concept that increased intrathoracic or intraabdominal pressure can redirect flow within the vertebral venous system. This is anatomy that behaves like physiology.
