Description
Running distally through the anterior forearm, the radial and ulnar arteries approach the wrist on their respective lateral and medial sides, then contribute to the superficial and deep palmar arches across the palm. From these arches, common palmar digital arteries course distally and divide into proper palmar digital arteries along the sides of each finger, with dorsal and palmar venous channels returning proximally in parallel. Superficial veins form a finer, more variable network over the hand, while deeper venae comitantes accompany the named arteries. Red and blue coding keeps arterial inflow and venous outflow visually separate. Palmar arch anatomy matters any time you plan a puncture, flap, or harvest in the hand. The ulnar artery typically dominates the superficial palmar arch, so lacerations along the hypothenar region can bleed briskly, and arch disruption can threaten digital perfusion if collateral pathways are incomplete. Radial artery cannulation and transradial access also hinge on reliable ulnar collateral flow, the rationale behind the Allen and modified Allen tests. Small vessel. Big consequences.
