Description
Prominent cervical vessels descend from the upper mediastinum into the neck, where the common carotid arteries bifurcate into internal and external carotid arteries, and the internal jugular veins run lateral to the carotids within the carotid sheath. Branches of the external carotid distribute anteriorly and laterally across the face, supplying the lips, nose, cheek, and scalp through vessels consistent with the facial, superficial temporal, maxillary, and occipital arteries, with dense capillary beds mapped over the facial musculature. Superiorly, the arterial network approaches the cranial base while venous channels converge toward the jugular system; posteriorly, paired vertebral arteries course in the deep neck toward the foramen magnum.
