Dorsal foot anatomy is rendered with the osseous framework from the phalanges and metatarsals proximally to the tarsal bones and calcaneus, with the distal tibia and fibula implied at the ankle mortise. Superficial venous channels course in the subcutaneous plane over the metatarsals and around the malleolar region, where they converge toward the great saphenous vein medially and the small saphenous vein posterolaterally. Deep collecting veins accompany the dorsal and plantar arterial pathways between the metatarsals and within the tarsal tunnel region, remaining closely related to the interossei and the deep fascia. Neural trajectories are also mapped along the dorsum, consistent with the superficial and deep fibular (peroneal) nerves and their digital branches. Separating superficial from deep venous drainage matters when you are thinking about edema, varicosities, and thrombotic disease below the knee. The dorsal venous network often becomes a practical access site for peripheral cannulation, while the deep system, paired with the tibial and fibular veins, is the one interrogated on duplex ultrasound when deep vein thrombosis is suspected. Clear topography at the ankle also supports procedural planning, since venous and nerve branches crowd the malleolar corridors and iatrogenic sensory injury is a real risk.
