Description
Running along the dorsum of the male foot, the dorsal metatarsal arteries give rise to dorsal digital arteries that track distally over the metatarsals and along the dorsal aspects of the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges to each toe. Branches course in the intermetatarsal spaces, then split medially and laterally at the level of the metatarsophalangeal joints to border the digits, lying superficial to the extensor tendons and dorsal to the phalangeal shafts. Underlying osseous landmarks, including the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges, provide clear positional reference for the arterial tree. Small accompanying veins are typically shown parallel to the arteries. Dorsal digital arterial anatomy matters when you need to explain or plan distal perfusion in the setting of toe trauma, dorsal lacerations, or flap design around the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. This dorsal perspective also supports teaching collateral circulation between the dorsalis pedis system and the plantar arterial arch through perforating branches, a practical point when interpreting diminished toe pressures in peripheral arterial disease or diabetes-related ischemia. A clean map of these vessels helps clarify why seemingly minor dorsal incisions can threaten digital blood supply. It is a surgical anatomy problem.
