Plantar orientation frames the distal tibia and fibula superiorly with the talus seated between the malleoli, then follows the hindfoot into the calcaneus and the plantar arch across the tarsals and metatarsals. From the plantar arterial axis, the lateral and medial plantar arteries contribute to the deep plantar arch, sending plantar metatarsal arteries distally to the web spaces before they split into proper plantar digital arteries along the medial and lateral margins of each toe. Fine terminal arterioles course beside the digital nerves and veins in the fibrous toe pulp, hugging the phalanges and interphalangeal joints. Small vessels dominate.
