Description
Running along the dorsolateral aspect of the male foot, the lateral tarsal artery branches from the dorsalis pedis artery near the ankle and sweeps laterally across the dorsal surfaces of the tarsal bones. From this proximal origin, small dorsal tarsal branches course distally toward the bases of the metatarsals and contribute to the dorsal metatarsal arteries supplying the toes. Faintly rendered osseous landmarks such as the talus, navicular, cuboid, and metatarsals provide orientation beneath the overlying skin, while paired superficial veins accompany the arterial network in blue along the dorsal venous arch. Clinically, this dorsally biased view helps you track the segment of the dorsalis pedis system most often interrogated at the bedside and in vascular labs, where diminished dorsalis pedis flow can flag peripheral arterial disease or acute limb ischemia. The lateral tarsal artery is also the dominant arterial pedicle for the extensor digitorum brevis and supplies the lateral tarsal region, a territory that matters during dorsal approaches for midfoot fixation and when planning or raising dorsalis pedis based flaps, where anatomic variation or iatrogenic injury can compromise distal perfusion. A small vessel, with big consequences. Ideal for gross anatomy and lower limb dissection teaching, podiatry and orthopedic surgery texts describing dorsal incisions across the midfoot, and radiology or sonography materials correlating surface anatomy with Doppler evaluation of dorsalis pedis and its lateral tarsal branch in the setting of diabetic foot disease. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
