Description

Oriented in lateral profile, the upper limb is shown from shoulder to hand with the humerus superiorly and the radius positioned lateral to the ulna in the forearm. The biceps brachii occupies the anterior compartment of the arm, its long head tracking proximally toward the intertubercular groove and its short head arising more medially from the coracoid process before the bellies converge distally. Deep and posterior to it, the triceps brachii forms the bulk of the posterior arm and approaches the olecranon, while the elbow joint is framed by the distal humerus articulating with the radial head and proximal ulna. Carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges extend distally beyond the wrist. A lateral perspective clarifies the functional relationship between the biceps brachii and the radiocapitellar complex, where biceps contraction couples elbow flexion with forearm supination via insertion on the radial tuberosity. This is the view you want when teaching distal biceps tendon rupture, because the tendon’s course toward the proximal radius and its clinical testing (Hook test) make more sense when you can see how close it runs to the radial head and bicipital aponeurosis. It also supports discussion of the lateral antecubital fossa as a surgical corridor for distal biceps repair and the nearby posterior interosseous nerve at risk during exposure.
