Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the arm, the biceps brachii is presented from a medial perspective with the humerus deep to the muscle belly and the forearm bones extending distally into the wrist and hand. Proximally, the long head tendon courses superiorly toward the supraglenoid tubercle while the short head tracks to the coracoid process, the two heads converging into a single fusiform belly as they pass inferiorly. Near the cubital fossa, the distal tendon angles to the radial tuberosity on the proximal radius, and the broad bicipital aponeurosis fans medially across the anterior elbow toward the antebrachial fascia, superficial to the ulna. Radius and ulna are clearly separated, with the radius positioned laterally even when viewed from the medial side. Medial viewing clarifies relationships that get lost in a straight anterior plate, most importantly the bicipital aponeurosis crossing the neurovascular plane of the cubital fossa, where the brachial artery bifurcates into radial and ulnar arteries and the median nerve travels deep. Small but teachable. This is also the angle that best supports clinical explanation of distal biceps tendon rupture and repair, since reattachment to the radial tuberosity and restoration of supination strength depend on the tendon’s distal trajectory and its proximity to the posterior interosseous nerve during the anterior or two-incision approach. In anatomy lab instruction, this plate pairs well with lessons on elbow flexion and forearm supination mechanics, and it fits cleanly into upper-limb chapters covering shoulder origins and distal insertions in Terminologia Anatomica. Orthopedic and sports medicine texts can use it to annotate distal biceps tears, hook test rationale, and the protective role of the lacertus fibrosus during tendon retraction.
