Description
Running along the lateral (radial) border of the forearm, the brachioradialis is presented as a superficial strap muscle spanning from the distal lateral humerus to the distal radius, crossing the elbow anteriorly. Proximally, its fibers arise from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus and the adjacent lateral intermuscular septum, then descend to a tendon inserting on the lateral surface of the distal radius at the level of the styloid process. Deep and medial to it lie the radius and ulna in parallel, with the brachioradialis forming a visible boundary between the anterior flexor mass and the posterior extensor compartment along the lateral forearm. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this lateral perspective is the one you want when teaching surface anatomy of the elbow and proximal forearm, because brachioradialis is both palpable and a common landmark for the radial nerve as it courses between brachialis and brachioradialis before dividing into superficial and deep branches near the lateral epicondyle. It also frames the lateral border of the cubital fossa, a region where injury patterns and surgical approaches intersect, including radial head exposure and assessment of elbow flexion strength in mid-pronation (where brachioradialis contributes more than biceps brachii). Pain at the distal lateral forearm can relate to overuse at its insertion near the radial styloid, a consideration in differential diagnosis alongside de Quervain tenosynovitis and lateral epicondylalgia.
