Description
Running along the radial border of the forearm, the brachioradialis forms a superficial strap from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus and adjacent lateral intermuscular septum to the distal radius at the radial styloid process. From a medial perspective, its muscle belly sits anterior to the lateral epicondyle region and becomes a tendon as it courses distally, lying lateral to the brachialis at the elbow and approaching the radius just proximal to the wrist. Deep to its proximal portion, the distal humerus and elbow capsule frame the origin area, while the radius and ulna define the forearm axis. The relationship to the radial side is unmistakable. Clinically, this view clarifies why brachioradialis is a dominant elbow flexor in the neutral or “handshake” position, a test position often used when assessing lateral elbow pain and radial nerve function. Radial nerve branches traverse the lateral arm and forearm in the neighborhood of brachioradialis, and tenderness or weakness around the lateral supracondylar region can help differentiate radial tunnel syndrome from lateral epicondylitis, where the extensor carpi radialis brevis origin is the usual pain generator. A useful landmark. Use it in upper limb gross anatomy teaching to contrast brachioradialis with biceps brachii and brachialis, and in clinical skills curricula when demonstrating elbow flexion strength testing and surface anatomy around the lateral epicondyle and radial styloid.
