Description
Viewed laterally in the male larynx, the cricoid cartilage sits inferior to the thyroid cartilage and superior to the first tracheal ring, forming the only complete cartilaginous ring of the upper airway. Anteriorly, its narrow arch (arcus cartilaginis cricoideae) lies deep to the inferior border of the thyroid cartilage, while posteriorly the broad lamina rises superiorly toward the arytenoid cartilages. Superior to the cricoid, the epiglottis and laryngeal inlet are suggested by the overlying supraglottic framework, and posterior relations imply the hypopharyngeal wall and cricoarytenoid region. A lateral perspective makes the cricoid’s height difference between the anterior arch and posterior lamina immediately legible, which is where many learners get turned around when translating palpation and endoscopic findings into three-dimensional anatomy. The cricoarytenoid joints sit on the superolateral cricoid facets and underpin true vocal fold abduction and adduction, so pathology such as cricoarytenoid arthritis (rheumatoid disease, post-intubation injury) can be tied directly to impaired cord mobility and airway symptoms. This is also the level of the cricothyroid membrane just superior to the cricoid arch, a key landmark for emergency cricothyrotomy.
