Description
Positioned inferior to the thyroid cartilage, the cricoid cartilage appears in lateral profile within a transverse cross section of the male larynx, its slender anterior arch curving anteriorly and its broad posterior lamina rising superiorly behind the airway. Superior to the cricoid, the thyroid cartilage and the epiglottis outline the supraglottic framework, while bands of connective tissue bridge the spaces between cartilages along the lateral laryngeal wall. Red-stained intrinsic muscles occupy the anterolateral and posterolateral margins, abutting the cartilaginous framework where motion is generated and constrained. A lateral cross-sectional view is the cleanest way to teach the cricoid as the only complete cartilaginous ring of the upper airway, and to relate its posterior lamina to the esophagus and hypopharynx that lie immediately posterior. That relationship matters in airway management: cricoid pressure (Sellick maneuver) targets the cricoid lamina to compress the esophagus, yet excessive force can distort the laryngeal inlet and worsen the glottic view during intubation. Surgeons also plan around the cricothyroid membrane just superior to the arch, the entry site for emergency cricothyrotomy and a key landmark in laryngeal framework procedures.
