Description
Encircling the inferior larynx, the cricoid cartilage forms a complete ring with a narrow anterior arch and a broad posterior lamina. Superiorly it sits just below the thyroid cartilage at the cricothyroid joint, while inferiorly it continues into the first tracheal rings through the cricotracheal ligament. Laterally, the cricoid provides articular facets for the arytenoid cartilages on the upper border of the lamina, positioning the arytenoids posterior to the glottic airway. Overlying connective tissues, including the thyrohyoid membrane superiorly and the cricothyroid membrane anteriorly, frame the laryngeal skeleton. For teaching airway anatomy, this ring shaped cartilage matters because it is the only circumferential cartilaginous support in the upper airway, so subglottic swelling and post-intubation stenosis tend to declare themselves at the cricoid level rather than at the C-shaped tracheal rings. The posterior lamina also explains common clinical pitfalls: a high cuff pressure or prolonged intubation can produce mucosal ischemia against the rigid lamina, and cricoarytenoid joint fixation can mimic vocal fold paralysis. In adult males, the larger laryngeal framework makes these spatial relationships easier to demonstrate, but also more relevant for sizing endotracheal tubes and planning laryngeal exposure.
