Description
Centered in the adult male larynx, the cricoid cartilage forms a complete ring with a narrow anterior arch and a broader posterior lamina that rises superiorly behind the airway. Along the superolateral margins of the cricoid lamina, paired oval facets receive the bases of the arytenoid cartilages, positioned posterior to the glottic level and medial to the thyroid ala. Inferiorly, the cricoid narrows toward its junction with the first tracheal ring, while its lateral surfaces provide the inferior articular facets for the thyroid cartilage at the cricothyroid joints. Key intrinsic muscles logically frame these landmarks, including the posterior cricoarytenoid on the posterior lamina and the cricothyroid spanning the anterolateral cricoid to the inferior border of the thyroid cartilage. For airway and voice mechanics, no laryngeal cartilage matters more in three dimensions than the cricoid. It is the only complete cartilaginous ring of the upper airway, so circumferential edema, scarring, or chondritis can produce fixed narrowing, a core concept in subglottic stenosis and post intubation injury. The cricoarytenoid joints atop the lamina govern arytenoid rotation and gliding, so arthritis, posterior glottic scarring, or recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy becomes easier to teach when the arytenoid facets and posterior lamina are clearly oriented. A small structure. Big consequences.
