Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the superficial cervical musculature forms a layered curtain from the mandible to the clavicle and scapula. Superiorly, the suprahyoid group can be inferred along the floor of the mouth and beneath the mandible, while the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, marking the transition between anterior and posterior cervical triangles. Posterior to it, fibers of the trapezius occupy the posterolateral neck and shoulder, with deeper slips such as the levator scapulae (the blue-highlighted muscle is consistent with its straplike course) ascending from the superior angle and medial border of the scapula to the transverse processes of C1 to C4. A side-on view of these neck muscles matters because it maps the palpable and surgical corridors used every day, from cervical lymph node examination along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid to posterior triangle approaches for accessory nerve preservation.
