Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect, the male parietal bone presents its convex external surface with the parietal eminence centrally and the superior temporal line arching anteroinferiorly across the squamous part toward the frontal region. Along the anterosuperior border, the serrated coronal suture margin articulates with the frontal bone, while the posterior border corresponds to the lambdoid suture with the occipital bone. Inferiorly, the beveled squamous margin overlaps the squamous part of the temporal bone, and the posterosuperior angle approaches the region of the asterion where parietal, temporal, and occipital bones converge. Orientation is clear. This lateral surface matters because it ties bony landmarks to the scalp, dura, and meningeal vasculature in a way clinicians use at the bedside and in the operating room. The anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery courses deep to the pterion region, just anteroinferior to the parietal bone’s lower margin, and fractures that traverse this area can produce an epidural hematoma requiring urgent decompression. The superior temporal line also demarcates the attachment of the temporalis fascia and indicates the superior extent of temporalis muscle, a practical boundary when planning a pterional craniotomy or placing burr holes away from muscle bulk and vascular channels. Neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses use this perspective to teach cranial sutures, palpable surface anatomy, and how the calvaria is assembled from overlapping articulations rather than simple butt joints.
