Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect of the male skull, the occipital bone forms the posterior and inferior contour of the cranium, meeting the parietal bone superiorly along the lambdoid suture and the temporal bone anteroinferiorly at the occipitomastoid region. The external occipital protuberance and superior nuchal line sit posterior to the cranial base, marking the attachment zone for trapezius and deeper suboccipital musculature. Inferiorly, the occipital condyle projects toward the atlas (C1) to define the atlanto-occipital joint, while the mastoid process of the temporal bone lies anterolateral as a palpable landmark. A lateral occipital view matters because it places suture anatomy and craniovertebral junction landmarks in the same field, which is how clinicians often reason about skull base orientation.
