Description
Rendered as a semi-transparent lateral skull, the occipital bone is readable through the overlying cranial contour, with the squamous part forming the posterior cranial wall and curving superiorly toward the parietal region. The lambdoid suture tracks along its superior border, while the mastoid region of the temporal bone sits anteroinferior to the occipital margin. Inferiorly, the occipital base relates to the craniovertebral junction, with the upper cervical vertebrae partially included behind the mandibular ramus. Clean landmarks. Lateral views of the occiput matter when you need to teach or plan around posterior skull contours that are otherwise hard to appreciate on isolated bone plates.
